About Montana Wildlife Federation

Founded in 1936, the Montana Wildlife Federation is a statewide conservation organization dedicated to protecting Montana’s wildlife, habitat, public lands and waters, and public access. MWF works through policy advocacy, public engagement, partnerships, and grassroots organizing to ensure hunters, anglers, conservationists, and other outdoor users have a voice in the decisions affecting Montana’s natural resources. MWF is an independent affiliate of the National Wildlife Federation and works with national, regional and local partners to advance shared conservation priorities.

The Role

The coordinator will expand MWF’s communications capacity, with a focus on our federal conservation priorities. You’ll work closely with the Communications Director and policy staff to turn complex state and federal developments into clear, accurate, timely communications, identifying what matters most to the public.

Short-form video is a big part of this role. You should be comfortable with face-to-camera reels: appearing on camera yourself when needed, and coaching volunteers to deliver a message naturally to the lens. You’ll also equip MWF board members, staff, members, affiliate clubs, and volunteers with the messages and materials they need to take action.

What You’ll Do

Messaging and Rapid-Response Communications

  • Develop clear, audience-focused messages about MWF’s federal conservation priorities, translating issues around fish and wildlife, habitat, public lands and waters, and access into language that resonates with hunters, anglers, and outdoor users.
  • Draft and edit social posts, action alerts, emails, and website updates.
  • Coordinate with policy staff so communications stay accurate, timely, and consistent with MWF’s adopted positions.
  • Support evergreen content about MWF’s mission, programs, partnerships, and work with the National Wildlife Federation.

Volunteer and Affiliate Engagement

  • Work with staff, affiliate clubs, and volunteers to turn communications priorities into specific organizing activities.
  • Create message guides, call scripts, social copy, images and video, letters to the editor, public-comment guidance, and meeting talking points.
  • Identify volunteers with the right experience, expertise, or geographic ties to serve as spokespeople, and prepare them for interviews, testimony, policymaker meetings, and on-camera reels.
  • Support volunteer participation in legislative and congressional meetings, hearings, agency processes, and community events, and track assignments and completed work.

Video and Digital Production

  • Plan, film, and edit face-to-camera reels and other short-form video on location, featuring volunteer spokespeople and, when needed, yourself.
  • Prepare and schedule platform-appropriate content for Instagram, Facebook, and other channels, and repurpose longer material for email, web, and social.
  • Create graphics and source photos for different platforms.

Qualifications

  • Experience filming and editing short-form video on location for Instagram, Facebook, and other platforms, and confidence delivering face-to-camera reels yourself.
  • Proficiency with editing platforms such as Canva, InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, or other Adobe Creative Cloud applications.
  • Excellent writing, editing, proofreading, and organizational skills, with a track record of working under tight deadlines.
  • Experience with journalism, social media, advocacy, conservation organizations, natural-resource agencies, government, or the legislative process.
  • Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple assignments, turn edits around quickly, and see projects through without close supervision.
  • Working proficiency with social media platforms, email marketing tools, website content-management systems, and Google Workspace and Zoom.
  • Familiarity with Montana’s outdoor traditions and time on public lands hunting, fishing, hiking, floating, or similar activities.
  • The selected contractor must hold a Montana Independent Contractor Exemption Certificate (ICEC), or obtain one before the start date. Learn more at mtcontractor.mt.gov.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with the Montana Legislature, campaigns, or advocacy coalitions, and knowledge of Montana media.
  • Familiarity with EveryAction, Meltwater, Hootsuite, Asana, or WordPress.
  • Experience with photography, image licensing, email production, and digital accessibility.

Contract Terms

  • The selected contractor must hold a Montana Independent Contractor Exemption Certificate (ICEC), or obtain one before the start date. Learn more at mtcontractor.mt.gov.
  • This is an independent contractor engagement. The contractor is responsible for their own taxes and is not eligible for MWF employee benefits.
  • Some deliverables may have early-morning, evening, or short-turnaround deadlines.
  • Occasional travel within Montana will be requested. Preapproved travel expenses will be reimbursed.
  • The contractor will provide their own computer, phone, camera (if applicable), and internet connection.
  • Work produced under the contract will be owned by Montana Wildlife Federation.
